About Debra (Debbie) Airth, RTCc

Welcome — I’m so glad you’re here.

Life can be incredibly complex, especially when you're navigating pain that others may not see or fully understand. Whether you're wrestling with identity questions, grief that lingers, relationship challenges, chronic illness, or emotional overwhelm, you deserve a space where your story is heard, honoured, and never minimized.

I'm Debbie (she/they), a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor Candidate with the Association of Cooperative Counselling Therapists of Canada (ACCT). I offer trauma-informed, affirming therapy for individuals and couples across British Columbia. My work centers on those exploring their identity, healing from trauma, and seeking support through mental health struggles like anxiety, depression, PTSD, and suicidal thoughts. I also focus on supporting members of the 2SLGBTQ+ and polyamorous communities, and those living with chronic pain or illness.

I bring both professional training and lived experience to the counselling relationship, and that matters. As someone who has walked through deep grief, trauma, and identity transitions, I know how isolating it can feel. I also know that healing becomes possible when we are met with compassion, safety, and someone who truly listens to us.

Therapy with me isn’t about “fixing” you, it’s about coming home to yourself.

If you would like to learn a little more about my journey to becoming a counsellor, I wrote a little about it here:
👉 Self-Discovery and Healing: My Journey and Approach to Counselling

My Approach to Therapy

My approach is personal and shaped by my own lived experiences, those that have tested my resilience and deepened my capacity to empathize. I believe in walking beside you, not ahead of you.

I offer a supportive space to explore your story, values, and truth, free from judgment. Whether you’re processing childhood trauma, questioning your identity, grieving a major loss, or seeking connection in your relationships, I’m here to support you in rebuilding safety, trust, and a sense of self.

As an Indigenous, polyamorous, and queer-identifying counsellor, I honour the strength that comes from lived experience. I am committed to providing culturally sensitive, inclusive, and affirming care for all individuals, regardless of their body, identity, or relationship structure.

You are not broken. You are becoming. Let’s begin from wherever you are.

My Core Values

The values of Empowerment, Authenticity, Strength, and Empathy guide everything I do. I bring these values to our work together, and I believe they are essential to the healing process.

  • Empowerment: I believe in your inherent strength and potential. Together, we’ll uncover your inner resources and equip you to make choices that align with your true self.

  • Authenticity: You deserve to show up in the world as your whole, authentic self. I’ll create the space for you to explore and embrace all parts of your identity.

  • Strength: Your resilience is already there even in the hardest moments. I’m here to help you tap into your strengths and build new tools to face life’s challenges.

  • Empathy: At the heart of my work is a commitment to truly understanding your experience, offering deep compassion and validation every step of the way.

Therapeutic Approaches

I take an integrative approach to therapy, meaning I draw from various evidence-based modalities tailored to your unique needs. We’ll work together to find the right tools and strategies that resonate with you. These are some of the therapeutic approaches I may use:

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT): Together, we'll explore and process your emotions, helping you better understand your feelings and promoting emotional healing.

Somatic Therapy: We'll connect with your body to release stored tension, trauma, and emotional pain, fostering holistic healing by integrating mind and body.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): This approach helps you accept difficult thoughts and feelings while focusing on meaningful actions that align with your values and long-term goals.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy: IFS helps you explore and understand the different "parts" of yourself, such as the inner critic, vulnerable child, or protector. Together, we'll work with these parts to promote healing, self-compassion, and integration, helping you develop a harmonious relationship with all aspects of your inner world.

Compassionate Inquiry: A deep, compassionate approach that helps you explore the root causes of your struggles, encouraging healing through self-awareness and kindness.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): DBT uses practical skills to help you manage intense emotions, improve relationships, and build mindfulness. It offers tools for emotional regulation and coping with stress.

Motivational Interviewing (MI): A collaborative process where we explore your motivations for change, supporting you in finding the confidence to make lasting, positive shifts in your life.

Narrative Therapy: We'll work together to explore and rewrite your life story, empowering you to shift the narrative toward strength, possibility, and self-agency.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT helps us identify and challenge negative thought patterns, replacing them with healthier, more empowering ways of thinking and acting.

Mindfulness-Based Therapies: Together, we'll practice mindfulness techniques to help you stay present, reduce stress, and develop a deeper sense of self-awareness and compassion.

Written Exposure Therapy: We'll confront and process challenging experiences through guided writing exercises, leading to greater emotional freedom and resilience.

A Journey Toward Authentic Living

Healing doesn’t happen in a straight line; sometimes it’s a messy, nonlinear process. But you don’t have to do it alone. I’m here to support you through all the twists and turns, helping you rediscover your resilience, embrace your authenticity, and start living the life you truly deserve. Whether navigating trauma, facing identity struggles, or seeking a compassionate space for personal growth, I'm here for you.

If you're ready to take the next step, reach out today, and let’s explore how we can work together to bring about lasting change.

You are worth the journey.
